What Is Sun Damage & Pigmentation?
Sun damage refers to changes that occur in the skin as a result of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. One of the most common signs of sun damage is pigmentation, which appears as dark spots, uneven skin tone or patches of discolouration on the skin.
Often referred to as sun spots or age spots, this type of pigmentation develops when the skin produces excess melanin as a protective response to UV exposure. Over time, these areas of increased pigment can become more noticeable and contribute to an uneven complexion.
Why It Happens?
Sun-induced pigmentation occurs when ultraviolet radiation stimulates melanocytes—the cells responsible for producing pigment—to create more melanin. This is the skin’s natural defence mechanism against UV damage.
When the skin is repeatedly exposed to the sun without adequate protection, melanin production can become uneven, resulting in visible dark spots and patches.
Common contributing factors include:
-
Chronic sun exposure
-
Inadequate or inconsistent sun protection
-
Age-related changes in skin function
-
Genetics and skin type
-
Hormonal influences
-
Previous inflammation or skin injury
Over time, cumulative sun exposure can also accelerate skin ageing and contribute to changes in skin texture and elasticity.
